THE PLAN
Drive your own Husky-led-sled through a winter wonderland of frozen lakes and pristine pine forests. Explore the wilderness by cross country skis. Enjoy Arctic picnics, The Ice Hotel, snow roll saunas and, fingers crossed, the Northern Lights. A 4-day-weekend Husky sledging expedition with accommodation and transfers.
DAY 1
On arrival at Kiruna airport in Sweden you’ll be greeted by your guides who’ll take you straight to the kennels. There’ll be a light lunch before getting your kit sorted, meeting the huskies, securing your luggage to the sleds, then speeding through the dark to an isolated cabin (approximately 15km covered over 1.5 hrs). The cabin is a true wilderness experience, away from people, roads and noise. Your water is collected from below the ice in a nearby brook, heated by wood stoves, and you’ll share a dinner over candle light before a little shut-eye.
DAY 2
After breakfast, set off on Swedish army style cross-country skis through the extraordinary arctic landscape. The trails vary from narrow, meandering runs through thick forests to the freedom of vast frozen lakes. You’ll cover approximately 10-15km, but routes and distance are flexible depending on the ability of the group. After enjoying an authentic Arctic picnic for lunch, you’ll meander your way back to the wilderness cabin for some ice fishing and a wood-fired sauna, before enjoying Swedish culinary all-sorts over dinner like reindeer, mashed potato and berry jus. Then a campfire and weather dependent, a sighting of the Northern Lights.
DAY 3
You’ll be woken by the sound of howling dogs as they enjoy their breakfast in the early morning. After enjoying your own breakfast, it’s an early start to get the most out of your dog-sledding back to the kennels. Approximately 35km covered over 6 hours. Once back at the Lodge, freshen up before the last night’s celebratory dinner at the lodge and maybe one last sauna and snow roll.
DAY 4
After breakfast you’ll then be taken to explore the nearby Ice Hotel (only 15 mins away). A true labour of love, the hotel melts every spring and is then rebuilt every winter by local and international artists and ice sculptors. You will then be driven to the airport ready to fly home after this action packed Arctic adventure.
